Expedition to the water area of Lake Teletskoye on July 9-15, 2024
Under the joint agreement between LIN SB RAS and Institute of Water and Environmental Problems SB RAS, an expedition to the water area of Lake Teletskoye was carried out on July 9-15, 2024.
The aim of the expedition was to carry out a comprehensive study of the diversity and functioning of microbial communities in the deep water stations of Lake Teletskoye. Comparison of the pathways of methane formation and oxidation and the N, S, Fe, and Mn cycles associated with these processes in the shallow-water, rifted Lake Teletskoye with the data obtained for the ancient, deep-water, and also rifted Lake Baikal.
To achieve this goal, A.V. Lomakina, PhD in Biology, Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Hydrocarbon Microbiology LIN SB RAS, in cooperation with colleagues from the Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, sampled bottom sediments at 6 deep-water stations (218-327 m) using a dredge sampler onboard the research vessel “209”. Bottom sediment samples were collected from 0 to 18-20 cm depth to determine the taxonomic composition of microorganisms, metabolic characteristics of bacterial and archaeal communities, pore water chemical parameters and methane concentrations.
