It is with deep sadness that we share the news that on November 29, 2025, Vadim Vladimirovich Annenkov, the Deputy Director for Science of Limnological Institute SB RAS, Doctor of Chemistry and Professor, passed away from a brief illness at the age of 64.
Vadim Vladimirovich Annenkov
Vadim Vladimirovich was born on 20 November, 1962 in Irkutsk in the family, which was closely connected to the science, chemistry. Vadim Vladimirovich was passionate about chemistry in high school, he finished school with honors and then he graduated the chemistry department of ISU, defended his Ph.D. thesis, and soon his thesis for a doctor`s degree. He began his professional career at Institute of Oil and Coal-Chemical Synthesis of Irkutsk State University (1983-2000), subsequently moving to Irkutsk Institute of Chemistry SB RAS (2000-2004) where he worked as the head of the polymer synthesis laboratory. For more than 20 years, Vadim Vladimirovich has been working at Limnological Institute SB RAS (2004-2025), where he not only played a significant role in scientific research as the head of the laboratory of biomolecular systems but also contributed to the overall organization of Institute, working as the Deputy Director for Science (2016–2025).
The primary focus of his scientific research was new organic low- and high-molecular compounds, particularly regarding their application in biology and medicine. Skillfully integrating methodologies from chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics, he created a number of physiologically active polymers and unique materials. Specifically, these are polymers with grafted polyamine chains and analogs of natural polyamines. Various fluorescent dyes for in-life staining of organelles and biosimilar composite nanoparticles are obtained, which are precursors of new materials. New immunoadjuvants have been developed for medical purposes, significantly enhancing the production of protective antibodies, blood anticoagulants, components of erythrocyte test systems, and synthetic vectors for transfection. A set of works is devoted to the assimilation of silicon by Baikal organisms, for example, a new class of polyamines was discovered in Baikal diatoms.
Vadim Vladimirovich is the author of more than 280 scientific publications, including 18 patents. He knew not only how to conduct research, but also knew how to explain their meaning. For five years he taught at ISU, brought up 7 students who defended 6 Ph.D. theses and one thesis for a doctor`s degree. He was advanced to a professorship. Due to his example and extensive knowledge, his children also became scientists in the field of natural sciences. Having spent his entire life in Academgorodok of Irkutsk, Vadim Vladimirovich traveled to numerous other countries in pursuit of new scientific knowledge, collaborating with colleagues from the United Kingdom, Finland, the United States, Canada, India, and France. All of them noted his keen intellect and intellectuality.
From a young age, Vadim Vladimirovich determined that life should be lived primarily for others, a principle he adhered to throughout his life. He was a true enthusiast and a professional in the field of science, serving as a dependable support in all life situations for his colleagues, students, friends, family, and loved ones. It is impossible to express in a single paragraph the significance of the human life that has departed from us. The world has become emptier; we are sad with this loss and will preserve the memory and the knowledge that he has left us.
The staff of Limnological Institute SB RAS expresses deep condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Vadim Vladimirovich.
