The first Russian-Chinese expedition to Lake Baikal from July 31 to August 3, 2023
From July 31 to August 3, the first Russian-Chinese expedition of Chinese Geological University (Beijing), Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of CAS, Institute of Earth`s Crust of SB RAS and Limnological Institute of SB RAS was carried out at Lake Baikal within the memorandum on cooperation in the field of limnology and geology in East Asia. The participants visited bays: Peschanaya, Babushka and Aya, and Olkhon Island and Ogoy Island. The staff of IEC of SB RAS conducted an excursion into the geology of rocks of the south-eastern shore of Lake Baikal, their origin, composition and age at rest points. In the field, the expedition participants were able to familiarize themselves with local minerals. During the expedition, the staff of our Institute made reports: “Ultrastructural and cytochemical features of olfactory epithelium in fish under the action of various odorants” (Klimenkov I.V.); “Modern and paleo-DNA from bottom sediments of Lake Baikal” (Kirilchik S.V.) and “Paleoglaciological reconstruction of the northern part of the Barguzin Ridge, Northern Baikal” (Osipov E.Yu.). The Chinese and Russian delegations shared the experience and interests in geology, (paleo)limnology, microbiology and monitoring of organic pollutant and defined the fields of potential cooperation and further joint research.
