Rapid ice clearance in Lake Baikal
On April 10, open water areas began to appear from the Angara`s source to Buguldeyka settlement. A significant reduction in ice cover was from April 14 to 18, when the ice moved from Kultuk settlement to the northern top end of Olkhon Island and along the western coast farther Olkhon Island. In Listvyanka, an automated underwater hydrophysical station records the water`s temperature of 2-2.4 °C at a depth of 4 meters. Water often warms by more than 2 degrees between late April and early May. This large-scale event, which typically occurs in early May, has occurred for the first time since 2000, according to an analysis of satellite image data.
