Expedition on board RV "I.D. Papanin", July 11-16, 2018, Southern Baikal (shallow-water zone) and Maloye More.
The expedition was carried out within the framework of the
programs "Studies of Evolutionary, Ecological and Molecular-Biological
Aspects of Silica-Dependent Chromista as Main Members of Silica Cycle
in Aquatic Ecosystems" and "Assessment and Forecast of Ecological
State of Lake Baikal and Adjacent Territories under Conditions of
Anthropogenic Impact and Climate Change" on board RV "I.D. Papanin" on
July 11-16, 2018 in the shallow-water zone of Southern Baikal and
Maloye More. The aim of the expedition was to study growth dynamics of
algal and bacterial communities in Maloye More Strait and littoral
area of Southern Baikal using suc methods as microscopy, cultivation
and molecular biology.
The researchers collected 64 water samples and 15 phytoplankton
samples for the analysis of chemical characteristics of water, its
temperature and transparency, total number of bacteria and cultivated
heterotrophs, species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and
for cultivation of diatoms and obtaining of total DNA of microalgae
and bacteria. They also analyzed spatial distribution of summer
phytoplankton species in the 0-7 m layer based on microscopic analysis
of quantitative net samples with the dominance of diatoms Synedra
acus and Aulacoseira baicalensis and dinoflagellates Ceratium
hirundinella and Anabaenaand.
