Every 5 years beginning from 1989, Limnological Institute hosts an international conference dedicated to the memory of G.Yu. Vereshchagin, an outstanding Russian scientist, an organiser of comprehensive large-scale studies at Lake Baikal. According to the traditions of the Conference, specialists of various disciplines are invited to share results of their investigations performed at Lake Baikal and in other water bodies of the world.
The following scientific problems and prospects of further investigations are planned to discuss at the conference:
- Biodiversity and problems of speciation in ancient closed ecosystems: molecular and classical approaches and models.
- Evolution of genes, genomics, metagenome analysis of biological communities.
- Microorganisms: distribution and symbiotic relationships in aquatic ecosystems.
- Methane in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Cycle of organic matter and nutrients.
- Hydrophysics and hydrochemistry of deep water bodies.
- Transport of substances and energy at the interface.
- Paleolimnology, evolution of lacustrine ecosystem, reconstructions of environmental changes and climate of the past.
- Large-scale changes in freshwater ecosystems under the effect of natural and anthropogenic factors.
The official languages of the Conference are English and Russian.
